Capric/Caprylic Triglyceride (fractionated Coconut Oil)

This is made from a fractionation process which separates light and solid parts of Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil (which is extracted from the meat of mature coconuts). Coconut Oil is an excellent moisturiser, as well as being antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and an antioxidant.

Vitellaria Paradoxa (Shea Butter)

This is extracted from the nut of the African shea tree.  Shea butter has been used in skincare for thousands of years – even back to the days of Cleopatra!  Shea butter is a wonderful moisturiser.  Our Shea Butter is from Ghana in West Africa.

Cera Alba (Yellow Beeswax)

This is a natural, edible wax produced by bees! Beeswax is moisturising, as well as being antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and an antioxidant.

Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499) and Tin Oxide (CI 77861)

These are used to add the pretty colour to 4 of our tinted lip balms.  Mica is a colourless brittle silicate mineral which has a shimmery surface and is considered to be safe and non toxic.  Iron Oxides, Titanium Dioxide and Tin Oxide (all naturally occurring minerals) are added in varying amounts to the Mica to produce the different colours.

To achieve their pretty colours, so many lip products (lipstick, balm, gloss) contain ingredients which we would rather not end up ingesting because we use them on our lips!  These ingredients include cochineal beetles (which are crushed into a powder and used in many red lip products), bromo acid (eg D&C Red No 27), synthetic dyes and other nasty chemicals.  We love the pretty, shiny slick of colour our tinted lip balms give to our lips, without us worrying about ingesting bugs, and potentially dangerous chemicals.

NOTE:  Our tints do not stain or put ‘long-lasting’ colour onto your lips, but instead give you a hint of colour in a shiny moisturising finish.  There is no need to look in the mirror to apply our lip balms!

Essential Oils*

We use essential oils to provide the yummy scent in our lip balms.  Our Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime, Distilled), Citrus Sinensis (Sweet Orange, Cold Pressed), Cinnamomum Zeylanicum (Cinnamon Bark, Distilled) and Mentha Spicata (Spearmint, Distilled) essential oils have been obtained through either cold pressing or steam distillation.  Cold pressing is where the oil is essentially pressed out of the rind of the fruit. Steam distillation uses water and steam (ie. no nasty chemicals) to extract the oil from the fruit peel, flower or leaves.

NOTE: As there are many sources warning against the use of essential oils during pregnancy, please check with your doctor before using our scented lip balms if you are pregnant.  Remember all of our lip balms can be purchased without any scent.

 * Note regarding our use of citrus essential oils (lime and orange). Some citrus oils have found to be photosensitisers (ie. They increase the vulnerability of the skin to the sun).  However, the specific citrus oils we use have been found by US studies not to cause photosensitivity.  We use steam distilled Lime Essential Oil (citrus aurantifolia) and sweet Orange Essential oil (citrus sinensis).

Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E)

The Vitamin E used in our lip balms is natural, not synthetic.  Vitamin E is an antioxidant so can help protect skin cells from the damaging effects of free radicals. Vitamin E is also a natural preservative, helping to extend the shelf life of our lip balms.
